Carry on or Checked in luggage?

When you fly, do you try to fit everything into your carry on? Getting everything you need for a 5 day, 7 day trip into a 9″ x 14″ x 22″ (including wheels and handles) can be quite challenging! However, it can be done, and it can save you close to $100 per person! Check in luggage affords you more space and more freedom through TSA, but ends up costing $$$ on top of your vacation. Meaning, at the airport, you’ll be handing over money before you even start your trip.

Here’s some tips to help get your fun started in a smaller suitcase:

Slow your roll – roll those jeans, tees, and maxi dresses. Think Marie Kondo, fold in half, then roll tightly, trying to keep out the wrinkles as you go.

Make a packing list – this will help you remember everything needed. I start a couple of weeks before the trip, adding as it gets closer, and as I remember things.

Know the airline’s bag fees – each airline is slightly different. Know the limitation prior to arrival for your flight. No worse way to start your trip than spending your cash at the airport for bringing your clothes.

Liquids – get the 3-1-1- rule down. The airlines allow liquids in your carry on, BUT they need to be in 3.4 ounce bottles or smaller, and in a quart sized clear ziploc bag. Anything else and they will throw your liquids away. Did you know peanut butter, lip gloss, and mascara are liquids, too? ANYTHING liquid will need to be in a clear ziploc. If unsure of what to do, check this link for more details.

Layer – pack in layers, and pack layers to wear. We all know the key to winter wear is in layers, but it’s a good thing for travel, too. You never know when you might need a light jacket, or tank top…so think of this while packing. Also, make sure your tee will match a skirt and shorts, and you can mix and match with less things to take. Also, jeans take up tons of room, if possible chose knits for easier packing and more space.
