Want to make your next vacation more memorable? Get off the beaten path!

No matter where you go, journeying away from the main tourist destinations will make it more special. You’ll discover new things, just you and your travel companions. You’ll create special memories.

I remember a trip in Scotland one time. My friend and I were on a literary tour of sorts, finding the places written about in books. We took a bus from Loch Ness to Glen Coe, we stayed at a lovely, but very out of the way B&B. The bus dropped us off about 1/2 mile from this B&B. So, we took off, hiking down the one lane road, through glens, brooks, and sheep farms. We ran into an escaped Highland cow, that just wanted his ears scratched, and ferns larger than us! It only took about 15 minutes, but it was magical. Something neither of us will forget.

Hard to believe that magical place was the site of the bloodiest battle of Scots against Scots, the MacDonalds and the Campbells.

But, just stepping out of the main tourist spots, and going our own way (with a lot of knowledge of the area), we made unique memories of our trip.

I’ve also learned, not all trips go smoothly. Sometimes there’s flight delays, or weather issues, or something else out of your control. But often, those issues end up being the funny part of your vacation stories…so not only should you look to get off the beaten path once in a while, you should remember that what is inconvenient today, is your funny story later!
